State Summary 3: New York

Updated: Jan 16, 2019

Here are the stats for our time spent in New York:

Total Days: 13 (Sept 8-Sept 20)

Total Anchorages: 3

Total Marina Stays: 2 (moorings, not marinas)

Total Nautical Miles Covered: 142

Total Nautical Miles Covered So Far: 296.57

Highs:

  • making it through NYC with perfect timing of the tides

  • seeing New York City from the water

  • the water taxi operators in Port Jefferson (especially Jim)

  • having Aaron's sister aboard

  • Staying with Aaron's sister in Brooklyn for a night

Lows:

  • having our engine die and not know why

  • failing to make it past NYC the first time

  • having to pay to get our fuel tank cleaned

  • dragging anchor

  • being stuck on the boat in horrible weather

  • a lot of rain

Firsts:

  • dragging anchor

  • not being able to go to shore due to bad weather

  • turning back

  • passing by a major city

  • seeing New York City from the water

  • seeing the Statue of Liberty up close

  • mooring

  • having our engine die on us

Lessons Learned:

  • the bluff you thought would protect you from wind when you looked at the chart may just be a low-lying beach

  • if your boat sat on the hard for a few years before you bought her, she probably has a ton of gunk in her fuel system

  • Coffee will refuse to go on deck until he can't possibly hold it anymore

  • you better always try to catch the right tide on the Race to save you hours

  • became intimately aware of our fuel system

  • friends, no matter how far away, will always offer assistance when needed

  • ferries in NY harbor are driven my kamikaze madmen
